Singapore Management University

The Singapore Management University (SMU) holds the unique position of being Singapore's first private university funded by the government of Singapore. An Act of Parliament empowers SMU to confer its own degrees recognised by the government. This flexibility will facilitate SMU's aim to be a world-class university on par with the best internationally. With English as the working language in Singapore and at SMU, international students and faculty find it particularly accessible studying and working here.

The SMU approach to preparing graduates for an era of unparalleled choices is a focused but broad-based education. Modeled after the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, America's top business school, SMU's curriculum aims to groom outstanding business leaders and creative entrepreneurs capable of excelling in a rapidly changing and dynamic world.

SMU currently offers :

Bachelor of Accountancy
Bachelor of Business Management
Bachelor of Science (Economics)
Bachelor of Science (Information Systems Management)

All these programmes are conducted on a full-time basis only. There are no part-time undergraduate programmes.SMU recognises that applicants may show talent and outstanding achievements in areas other than academic studies. SMU seeks students with strong academic potential, high self-motivation and broad interests. We aim to enroll individuals who will contribute to a rich university learning environment and benefit most from a stimulating and vibrant campus experience.

Admission will be competitive and selective to allow students outstanding in different fields to be considered on their own merit. SMU will use several measures to evaluate an applicant's achievements and abilities. Besides their academic results and SAT I scores, a personal essay and an interview will also count.

SMU welcomes students from all streams (science, arts, commerce, engineering, etc.). At SMU they enjoy the best of both worlds - a top-class US curriculum and teaching method (in collaboration with the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania) and the convenience and affordability of the local setting. In addition, there are opportunities for overseas exchange programmes.

The tuition fees at SMU are comparable to the fees charged at the other universities in Singapore. Scholarships and financial assistance schemes are available to deserving students. Students who do well in their studies at SMU will be eligible for the various Student Awards.

Bachelor of Accountancy

The Bachelor of Accountancy (BAcc) is a 4-year programme to develop well-rounded individuals schooled in a variety of subject areas. Modelled after the best of America's top business schools, the curriculum has been developed in close collaboration with the consistently top ranked Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

The BAcc programme aims to produce professional accountants who possess the attributes and skills that are needed to thrive in a knowledge-based economy. Such attributes include analytical and creative abilities, a broad perspective to think across disciplines and geographical or political boundaries, and a confident mastery of today's technology.

The BAcc curriculum is designed to fulfil all professional requirements for recognition by the accountancy profession without the need for further examinations, other than the pre-admission course required for all new members of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore (ICPAS). At the same time, it offers a broad-based and liberal education so as to provide the student with a broader perspective of the work environment and the world at large.

A distinctive feature of the BAcc programme is that top accounting professionals from the accounting profession and industry will participate in the programme as adjunct professors. Audit and tax partners and senior managers from the Big 5 accounting firms will bring real life perspective into the classrooms as instructors for audit and taxation courses. Besides giving students first-hand knowledge, these partners and senior managers will also select students from their classes to go on business internships at their firms. These internships last for a minimum of 10 weeks and can begin anytime after the completion of the first year of studies. Many students can expect to receive employment at these firms by the time they complete their accountancy programme.

Each student is required to complete 35 courses. Each subject area has a list of courses which must all be completed unless a choice is indicated. Students must read a minimum of 3 courses and a maximum of 6 courses per term.
