In an attempt to make schooling student-friendly and innovative, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced a new subject of Theater Studies for
its Class XI students from the current academic session.
The decision to introduce theatre studies as an elective subject for Class XI from the current academic session has gone down well with students.
However, the euphoria is tempered with disappointment on the move to introduce it as a pilot course on first-come-first-serve basis. This means that the course is
being introduced to test waters for now and will be introduced on a larger scale after studying response.
The textbook on Theater Studies would cover the history of Indian theatre and would include the works of major playwrights like Rabindranath Tagore and Bhartendu
Harishchandra, Girish Karnad, Chandrashekhar Kambar and others.
The move is being seen by educationists as a novel concept in bringing students closer to the means of traditional mass communication.
