Points To Remember:

  • There are four major domains of the earth- lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere
  • The atmosphere is divided into five layers based on composition, temperature and other properties. The different layers of the atmosphere are: troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere and exosphere
  • The large continuous masses of land above the earth’s surface are called continents. The major continents of the earth are: Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Africa, Australia and Antarctica
  • Asia is the largest continent, it covers one third of total earth’s land area. It lies in eastern hemisphere
  • World’s largest desert “Sahara” and world’s largest river Nile is in Africa
  • Oceans are the major part of hydrosphere. The ocean waters are always moving. The three movements of ocean waters are waves, tides and ocean currents. The four major oceans are: Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean and Arctic Ocean
  • Largest proportion of fresh water is in the form of glaciers
  • Oceanic crust forms surface of ocean basins, it is composed of Silica and Magnesium and also known as Sima
  • There is need to limit the use of resources, it is important to maintain balance in nature between the lithosphere, atmosphere and hydrosphere
