  • The movements of the earth are generally known as motion of the earth. It is of two types rotation and revolution
  • The rotation of the earth causes a lot of activities on the earth. For example, day and night, which are demarcated by the circle of illumination, occur due to the rotation of the earth.
  • The circle that divides the day from the night on the globe is called the circle of illumination
  • The revolution of the earth around the sun makes great changes in the life of the living organisms living on the earth’s surface. For example, the revolution of the earth is responsible for bringing about the changes in the season.
  • On 21st March and September 23rd, the sun rays fall directly on the equator. At this position, neither of the poles is tilted towards the sun; so, the whole earth experiences equal days and equal nights. This is called an equinox.
  • The orbit of a planet around the Sun is an ellipse, with the Sun in one of the focal points of the ellipse. Therefore, the orbit lies in a plane called the orbital plane
