Points To Remember:

  • Delhi before New Delhi was a nerve center of all political activities during the medieval period. As many as fourteen cities were founded by different rulers.
  • The Revolt of 1857 left a great impression over the British. They made a strict demarcation and tried to make Delhi safer. Many gardens and mosques were closed down and barracks for troops were made instead.
  • The British wanted Delhi to forget its Mughal past. The canal to the Red Fort was filled up and Jama Masjid was kept closed for 5 years.
  • The British realised the importance of Delhi in 1857 and important events were held here. Two grand durbars were planned in Delhi. In 1911, Delhi was declared as the new capital of the new rulers. Two architects were called to plan it.
  • Edward Lutyens and Herbert Baker were the two architects who designed the new imperial capital for the new European masters. It was planned to make the buildings much more impressive than those of Shahjahanabad.
  • At the time of partition India was freed but was divided. A large migration of populations took place across the border of the two newly created nations. Partition was marked by fierce rioting and burning of homes.
