Points To Remember:

  • During Medieval period new towns developed in different parts of India. These towns had functions like administrative centres, religious centres, crafts production and commercial activities
  • Towns developed were of different types like court town, pilgrimage centres, trading towns, ports etc.
  • Large number of masons, sculptors etc. were employed to build public works and monuments
  • Thanjavur is an example of temple town, items sold in Thanjavur market were jewellery, spices, grains and clothes
  • Water supply for the town came from wells and tanks
  • Traders crossed many kingdoms and forests, they travelled in caravans. They formed guilds to protect their interests. Two famous guilds are the Manigramam and Nanadesi
  • Arab, Persian, Chinese, Jewish etc. were foreign trading groups in India
  • Cinnamon, pepper, dried ginger were popular Indian spices
  • Temple dancers used to perform devotional dance, also known as devadasis
  • English East India company was major European trader
