Clear fitness test if you opting for physical education after Class X

April 17, 2007, 12:00 am

If you thought taking up Physical Education in Class XI and XII was an easy way of scoring marks in the Boards, think again.

Starting this academic session, the CBSE has set a bar for those who want to study Physical Educationeither represent your school in a sport, or clear a physical fitness test.

The guideline for schools: Schools need to have a minimum of a 200 m track, capacity and infrastructure to teach three subjects/sports and a teacher who holds an MA in the subject. Class size, per unit, too has been fixed at 40 students. The disciplines include badminton, hockey, handball, kabaddi, kho kho, skating, swimming and taekwondo.

As part of a theory component in Class XI, students would also be given a lowdown on career choices in the field. Other topics covered include sports psychology, motivation during sports and the effects of drugs on sports performances.

In Class XII, yoga and its study will comprise a separate unit. So will sports sociology. The practical component is for 30 marks .

Teachers have welcomed the move. The moment you set a bar for the study of a subject, its worth goes up. We basically face two problems: parents who just want their wards to take up an academic subject, and, students who opt for the subject without being serious, said Rakesh Rai, Physical Education teacher, Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan school.

The good part is that only interested students will take up the programme now. Introducing aspects like sports psychology and motivation is a good move. Before this, the theory part was more restrictive, he added.

RC Shekhar, principal, Gyan Bharati school, who teaches the subject at a senior level, said: The most important aspect remains that the University does not recognise this. Once that is done, it will further help the subject.
