Started in 1984 as a self-financing institution Vellore Engineering College (VEC) by Dr. G. Viswanathan, a former Parliamentarian and Minister in the Tamil Nadu Government.
Then, VEC was affiliated to University of Madras and offers only three engineering branches i.e., Civil, Mechanical, and Electronics and Communication Engineering.
Currently, VIT University offers 64 Undergraduate, 35 Postgraduate, 16 Integrated, 2 Research and 2 M.Tech Industrial Programmes.
In 2001, the UGC and Ministry of HRD conferred VEC Deemed-to-be-University status, then “Vellore Engineering College” is converted to “Vellore Institute of Technology” and lastly in 2005 the name Vellore Institute of Technology becomes “VIT University”.
VIT University has opened three more campuses in addition to Vellore Campus, which are located in Chennai, Bhopal and Amravati (AP).

Admissions
VIT admits students through its own engineering entrance exam, called the Vellore Institute of Technology Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE). It is conducted every year in the month of April and May. The exam has been conducted online since 2013 and in 2018 212,000 students have registered. Admissions for non-engineering undergraduate programmes are granted on the basis of the applicants’ 12th standard board exam results. It is mandatory for every student to have studied mathematics as a regular subject to be considered for admission.
