INSTRUCTIONS:
1. There are 30 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.
2. Marks for each question are indicated against the question.
3. Questions from serial number 1 to 10 are 1 mark questions. Answers of these questions may be from one word to one sentence.
4. Questions from serial number 11 to 18 are
3 marks questions. Answers of these questions should not exceed 80 words each.
5. Questions from serial number 19 to 28 are 4 marks questions. Answers of these questions should not exceed 100 words each. 6. Question numbers 29 and 30 are map questions. Attach the maps inside your answer book. * Disaster Management is now only for Project Work. From 2009, no questions will be asked from Disaster Management in the Question Paper.

Q. 1. Name the country which remained a major producer of printed material for a long time. 1

Ans. USA. This was because by mid 19th century New York had perfected the power driven cylindrical press (rotary machine) for mass production of newspapers and magazines.

Define the term ‘serialised’.

Ans. Serialising means printing or presenting a long story (usually novels) in instalments or in parts through magazines, radio or T.V.

Q. 2. What is the meaning of sustainable development? 1

Ans. Sustainable development means that kind of development which does not,
(i) depend on continued borrowing from outside the country,
(ii) require internal resources that a country cannot provide continuously.

Q. 3. Mention two sources of obtaining fresh water. 1

Ans. Sources of obtaining fresh water: (any two)
1. Precipitation — from rainfall.
2. Surface water—in rivers, lakes, etc.
3. Ground water—water stored in underground acquifers which get recharged by rainfall.

Q. 4. What is an ore? 1

Ans. The term ore is used to describe an accumulation of any mineral, extracted from the earth, which is mixed with other elements.

Q. 5. State two main bases of social division in Sri Lanka. ½+½=1

Ans. The two main bases of social division in Sri Lanka are Linguistic differences and Religious differences.
(i) The major social groups are the Sinhala speakers and the Tamil speakers.
(ii) Sinhala-speaking people are mostly Buddhists, while most of the Tamils are Hindus or Muslims.
