Chapter 8: Similar Triangles

Example 2. In the given figure, and Find x.

Solution:-

In (given)

Or, (4x - 3) (5x - 3) = (8x - 7) (3x - 1)

Or, 20x2 - 12x - 15x + 9 = 24x2 - 8x - 21x + 7

Or, 4x2 - 2x - 2 = 0

Or, 2x2 - x - 1 = 0

Or, 2x2 - 2x + x - 1 = 0

Or, 2x(x - 1) + 1 (x - 1) = 0

(x - 1) (2x + 1) = 0

x = 1, -1/2

But sides of a triangle cannot be negative
